Twistgrip Motorcycles were established in 1978 by Mike Fisher. Originally it was located on Alfreton Road in Nottingham but soon moved to Radford Road. The current owner Alan Cooper started working for Twistgrip in 1985 and bought the business 5 years later.
Prior to becoming the owner Alan had combined his career at Twistgrip with being a regular competitor in motorcycle road racing. This he did with much success winning many races, championships and a few lap records along the way.
After hanging up his leathers Alan continued his involvement with the sport by sponsoring a numberof riders. Former B.S.B regular Francis Williamson rode for Twistgrip for two seasons and in 1993 Kevin Wholey won the U.K. Riders National Championship on a Twistgrip prepared Yamaha TZ250.
In 2002 Twistgrip moved to an industrial unit on St Peters Street to concentrate on the workshop and spares side of the business. These were the two areas that Alan felt they excelled in and had built up a very good local reputation and client base.
The economic problems of 2008 led to a serious decline in the motorcycle trade and the premises simply became too expensive to run in the rapidly shrinking market.
Faced with these facts and not wanting to let the Twistgrip name disappear Alan came up with the novel idea of operating a mobile servicing and repairs operation. This would allow him to provide all the services he had previously but without the costly overheads of permanent premises. In 2012 that became a reality.
7 Years on and 2019 brings an exciting new development with the opening of a fully equipped workshop and stores in Cotgrave. There has also been a return to the race track by Alan who won the 2018 CRMC 600cc production championship and also prepared the bikes for Kevin Wholey and the IMS Racing team who won the same title in both 2015 and 2016
